Carp-Carpe Diem! Why Can’t You Seize your opportunity?

Posted by The Right Reverend on September 29, 2005

25 Runs in 21 Innings? What happened? I know these games don’t count, but there is a major honor in the Cy Young on the line and this is what we get? Carp! Wake up! Carpe Diem! What are you doing? Carpenter is normally a bulldog when you give him a lead, and last night he gives up the lead three times! When he lost last weekend to Milwaukee he said his performance made him want to puke. Now last night he says he’s taking positives from it?! What is positive about giving up back to back home runs? Or giving up the lead 3 times?

This is not the Carp we’ve seen all year. Well, I hope he can turn it on in Game 1 upcoming because we need him. He is still our ace.

On the positive side it is nice to see in this series with the Astros that Sanders and Walker are hitting their stride.

Well, we are 2-9 since we clinched and the Cards are playing their last regular season series with the Reds. Here’s to hoping for a 3 game sweep and 2 consecutive 100 win seasons. Regardless I think the Cards can turn it back on when it counts, and if so all this panic is in vain.

It’s been a great year, but there is work yet to do.

Posted by The Right Reverend on September 28, 2005

Mulder beats Roger Clemens and the Astros in 10 innings. Carpenter 1 hits the Blue Jays. Eckstein’s walk-off grand-slam against the Braves. Grudzelaniek’s cycle. Pujols sets record to be 1st player to homer 30 times in his first 5 seasons. We have a Cy Young contender in Carpenter. An MVP candidate in Pujols. A Manager of the Year contender in LaRussa. We’ve amassed the most victories of any team in the last 2 years.

All these achievements are something I enjoy as a fan and give me pride in my team, nothing would make me happier as a fan than to see the Cardinals win the World Series. Last year was the closest the Cardinals came to that goal since 1987 until they were swept by Boston last year. And while I have tried my best to forget it, it still can linger. I feel I’ve waited my whole life to see them achieve this goal, and I hope they can do it.

I feel nervous inside already, like I did last year in October. Every defeat was agonizing and every victory was exhilarating. I paced the floors, yelled at the TV, cheered, & lost sleep throughout the whole playoffs and then World Series. It was a real rollercoaster experience to say the least. It only ended up in disappointment when the Cardinals were beat by the Red Sox, and seemingly by destiny. My wife will tell you I wasn’t always fun to be around in October. So I have to tell myself, “It is only a game.” “Be optimistic.”

But hopefully I can tell myself soon, “The Cardinals are the World Champs.” And the ballpark I grew up going to can be put to rest in grand fashion.

First post-My Introduction to Cardinal baseball

Posted by The Right Reverend on September 26, 2005

I’ve been a Cardinal fan since I was 8 years old. My family moved to the St Louis area July 4th, 1987. We arrived from Michigan to our new home at dark, and while traveling at night I remember seeing fireworks in the distance. Of course that is exciting, and to make things more exciting as a young baseball fan who was now without Kirk Gibson and his beloved Tigers my mother let me know that the Cardinals are a good team with a star player by the name of Ozzie Smith. And she promised me we could go to some games at Busch Stadium from time to time.

I don’t really remember my first Cardinals game, but the Wizard quickly became a hero of mine. I remember his acrobatic back flips and his acrobatic defense at shortstop. I idolized him so much I used to throw tennis balls off the side of my house and try and dive for them like Ozzie.

I was devastated when the Cardinals lost the 87 World Series to Kirby “Big-Butt”, Frank Viola, and the thousands of hanky-waving Minnesotans in the “Screamer-Dome”, but a new passion was born.

Anyway, thank you for visiting. Here I would like to cover the excitement, joy, and anguish of being a Cardinals fan.
